Maine

Lobsters ands lighthouses.  Oh, and the author Stephen King, one of my faves.  These are the things that spring to mind at the mention of the state of Maine.

A couple interesting facts about Maine:

     1.  It is the only state to have a name which is one syllable long.
     2.  The population of Maine is over 98% white.
     3.  The state drink is Moxie, one of the first mass produced soft drinks in the US.

Having never visited Maine, I have to go on the description of Edna St. Vincent Millay for how it must look, from her poem "Renascence":

"All I could see from where I stood
was three long mountains and a wood
I turned and looked the other way
and saw three islands in a bay"

Another postcard from Maine can be found here.

  1. How lovely--it's been a few years since we've been to Maine. I do miss it. There's a peculiar and lovely feel all of its own that can't be found anywhere else.

  2. My home state! I have a t-shirt that says "Born in Maine, living in exile."

  3. Fun fact that I will use again and again - the only one syllable state name! I never knew... It kinda fits - strong yet simple and straightforward - that's how we found the state of Maine when we visited last summer. Thanks
